A year –round road crosses between Almaty and Urumchi via the border post at Khorgos. Khorgos is the Kazak customs and immigration post about four km west of the Kazak-China border. Its limited attraction include curious late 19th century mosque with a minaret in the form of a Chinese pagoda, beside a more conventional Central Asian dome; adding to the cross-cultural symbolism, the mosque’s ground floor windows look Russian. You must already have a valid Kazak or Chinese visa to cross here.
